You should know in advance whether your child will be able to handle the minor responsibilities or not. One should also get their children vaccinated against rabies and other pet connected diseases to ensure that your sweet gift doesn’t turn out to be a nightmare for the child.

A toddler may not be able to take care of itself, so you can’t expect the toddler to bear the responsibility of the pet. Apart from that school going kids may not be able to devote time for pet supervision for most part of the day. That being said, it’s advisable that you never leave small children alone with pets such as dogs, cats or similar bigger animals. The child may unknowingly harm the pet and thereby call for trouble. As a responsible parent, children should always be supervised when in company of pets.

Your best bet would be to choose a simple pet as a first pet for your child. One can consider having a pet that requires minimum maintenance such as a fish. All the child has to do is feed the fish once in a while and enjoy watching them move places within the tank. Whatever pet you decide, make sure that you do your homework properly before purchasing the pet. Once you feel that the child is mature enough to handle the responsibility of pet care, you can consider the inclusion of another pet as well.
